The main theme of the Scrolls derives from a folktale popular in the late Heian period. First, a wealthy man and a mendicant monk Myoren demonstrate the powers of a flying bowl. Second, they cure the Emperor Daigo, who was sick, by summoning Ken no Goho. Third, Myoren reunites with his elder sister, a nun, to visit the Todai-ji temple in Nara where she received an oracle from the Great Buddha.
To depict continuous changes of time and place, figures andscenery, the so-called “iji dozu ho (polichronical method)” isadopted to supernaturally travel into time and space, and connectwith people’s sense of popular animation today.
